Germany work permit.
5 pathways under the Skilled Workers Act.
Fachkräfteeinwanderungsgesetz restructured DE work immigration in 2020-2024. Five pathways now cover vocational workers, graduates, Blue Card, IT specialists, and job-seekers.
AufenthG gives employers five ways to hire qualified foreign staff in Germany as of 2026. The reform started with FEG 2020, expanded with Phase 1 (2023-11-18) lowering Blue Card salary thresholds, and Phase 2 (2024-03-01) adding the IT-specialist route and the Chancenkarte job-seeker title.
Path 1: skilled worker with vocational training (§ 18a)
§ 18a AufenthG opens to applicants with recognised vocational qualifications (Ausbildung equivalent). Recognition via BQFG procedures through ZSBA or chamber (IHK/HWK). No salary threshold, but pay must match qualification level.
Path 2: university graduate (§ 18b (1))
§ 18b (1) AufenthG: recognised university degree plus qualified employment contract. Covers graduate-level roles that do not reach Blue Card salary. anabin or ZAB degree recognition required.
Path 3: EU Blue Card (§ 18b (2))
See dedicated page. Higher salary threshold than (1), faster settlement (21-33 months), EU intra-mobility.
Path 4: IT specialist (§ 18g, since FEG 2024)
§ 18g AufenthG: 3 years relevant experience, no formal degree required, salary at least 60% of BBG (approximately €43,759.80 in 2026 = bottleneck equivalent).
Path 5: Chancenkarte (§ 20a, since 2024-06-01)
§ 20a AufenthG: points-based job-seeker residence for up to 12 months. Points for qualification, experience, German language (A2 or higher), age under 35, prior DE stay. Allows part-time work while searching.
§ 81a fast-track procedure
§ 81a AufenthG beschleunigtes Fachkräfteverfahren: employer applies in Germany while the future employee prepares consulate documents. ZAV processes in ~3 weeks, Ausländerbehörde ~3 weeks. Consulate then issues visa in 3 more weeks. Total ~8 to 12 weeks.
Recognition of foreign qualifications
Regulated professions (doctors, nurses, craft masters) require formal recognition through ZSBA or chamber of crafts. Since FEG 2024, Anerkennungspartnerschaft lets recognition happen in parallel with employment for up to 3 years, no need to complete recognition before arrival.
Settlement path (§ 18c)
Blue Card: 33 months, 21 with B1 German. Other qualified employment: 48 months typical (3 years with job + livelihood + pension contributions).
